Physical Education and Physical Therapy

Chileda's physical therapy services are provided with the goal of meeting stated outcomes through the use of accepted techniques and procedures. The objectives of physical therapy are to maximize ability through therapeutic exercise, to contribute to the optimum physical well-being of each individual, and to minimize disability.

Chileda's physical therapy staff members work with children who have neuromuscular, skeletal, pulmonary and cardiovascular disorders. Physical therapy enhances motor skills such as sitting, standing, rolling, crawling and walking. It also emphasizes posture training, wheelchair mobility and general muscular strengthening and conditioning.

In addition to the prescribed therapies that are part of each child's Individual Outcome Process, we also offer recreational activities that promote leisure skills and physical fitness.

Visitors to our gymnasium and large backyard often find students and staff indulging in games and sports. We also have "outings," a highlight for any kid. These off-campus activities frequently include a visit to a bowling alley, enjoying a walk at the nature center or going for a swim. These mainstream activities enhance physical well-being, and build social and community skills that are part of everyday life.
