Addressing the behaviors associated with developmental disabilities is an ongoing part of our program at Chileda. Each individual is evaluated to identify behavioral needs, with special emphasis placed on meeting sensory needs and correcting environmental conditions that interfere with living and learning.

The Behavior Services Department works closely with the client, his or her family, and with other departments at Chileda to develop a behavioral plan that addresses the needs of the individual. Behavioral plans are developed using proactive principles that include positive reinforcement and antecedent control. In addition, our education and recreation departments have developed supports to assist individuals to develop appropriate social skills in various environments.

Some behavioral occurrences may also be the result of an individual's limited communicative abilities. Behavior Services also works with licensed speech and language professionals to assist in identifying and addressing communications needs.

Chileda is committed to serving individuals who may often exhibit a variety of challenging behaviors. We also maintain a commitment to serve these individuals using techniques that are least restrictive and non-aversive. Chileda staff members are certified in Nonviolent Crisis Intervention through the Crisis Prevention Institute (www.crisisprevention.com) by one of our master's level certified trainers.

Data on the frequency and intensity of interfering behaviors is documented throughout all hours to assist in identifying behavioral trends. The data is used to track progress toward behavioral goals and objectives while monitoring the effectiveness of interventions.

To best assure the least intrusive treatment approaches are being used, Chileda's Behavior Services Department operates within the guidelines of the Wisconsin Division of Children and Family Services and Wisconsin Division of Supportive Living. Behavior programs are sent to the parent or guardian for input, review and approval. In addition, Chileda maintains an internal Residents' Rights and Advocacy Committee and an external Human Rights Committee that reviews behavior programs, medications and associated behavioral data on an ongoing basis.
