"A Child Who Couldn't Play" Video
1.5 hours (.15 CEUs)
This is an introductory session on autism. This session
introduces indicators of autism, signs and symptoms
of autism, autistic spectrum disorders, and DSM-IV
diagnostic criteria for autism and Asperger's
Syndrome.

Asperger's Syndrome
1.5 hours (.15 CEUs)
This session defines Asperger's Syndrome, it's
incidence and possible causes. In addition, the
following characteristics of Asperger's Syndrome are
discussed: Social relatedness and social skills, use of
language, preoccupation, undiagnosed or
misdiagnosed individuals, and co-existing conditions.

Communication Strategies
3 hours (.3 CEUs)
This session discusses what communication is,
communication modes, communication characteristics
of individuals with autism, and techniques to enhance
communication.

Social Implications/Theory of Mind
3 hours (.3 CEUs)
This session discusses the Theory of Mind with insights
and implications on how the mind of an individual with
autism may work. Appropriate strategies for teaching
socially acceptable behaviors are emphasized.

Sensory Input, Impact and Implications for Persons
with Autism

3 hours (.3 CEUs)
This session discusses three facets of processing
sensory input: integration, registration, and
dysfunction. Practical strategies to meet sensory needs
are also presented.

TEACCH
3 hours (.3 CEUs)
Treatment and Education of Autistic and related
Communication handicapped Children presents specific
teaching strategies that include visual scheduling,
modifying the environment, teaching independence,
and creating educational, recreational and life skills
tasks.

Medication and Side Effects for Persons with Autism
1.5 hours (.15 CEUs)
This session reviews the diagnostic criteria for autism
and autism spectrum disorders and then reviews
treatment evaluation of medication and behavior
intervention. Medications prescribed to individuals with
autism are covered in detail.

Nutritional Supplements
1.5 hours (.15 CEUs)
This session discusses the three commonly used
nutritional supplements and presents general
information, usual dosage, and length of trial period.

Controversial Therapies
3 hours (.3 CEUs)
This session discusses ten controversial therapies,
defining each therapy and it's potential for
positive/negative affects.

Positive Behavior Supports
1.5 hours (.15 CEUs)
This session discusses the use of non-intrusive behavior strategies to support appropriate social behaviors.

Family Perspectives and Implications for
Professionals Working with Children with Autism

1.5 hours (.15 CEUs)
This session will focus on family issues that may arise
that may be unique to families with a child with
autism.

Summary
3 hours (.3 CEUs)
This session will be an open discussion, allowing participants to review knowledge gained and to apply to actual situations. Each participant will be expected to summarize an autobiography about a person with autism that was read during the course of the training.
