  • Positive Behavior Supports
  • Sensory Integration

Although considered a relatively uncommon disorder, the incidence of individuals with autism spectrum disorders is 10 times more prevalent than 10 years ago. The dramatic rise in the diagnosis of autism calls for additional educational opportunities for school personnel, human service providers and healthcare providers. Join individuals from around the Midwest at the 2007 Midwest Autism Conference in Wisconsin.

Who Should Attend: Teachers, social workers, occupational therapists, physical therapists, medical professionals, group home and rehabilitation staff and university faculty who teach student teachers.

Community Training

Understanding and education are the keys to avoiding unfortunate situations. In October, Chileda was one of the local resources which made a presentation to law enforcement officers in the Crisis Intervention Team (CIT) training sponsored by the Mental Health Coalition of the Greater La Crosse Area. The primary goal of CIT is to train 25 percent of every law enforcement agency. The Chileda portion helped patrol officers and jailers recognize the behavioral symptoms and characteristics of a child or adult who has autism, and learn basic response techniques. Because individuals with autism face special risks, Chileda provided suggestions and options about how to address those challenges.

Throughout 2007, Chileda plans to expand this innovative program to include additional law enforcement agencies and departments, first responders, 911 operators and many other groups that require increased knowledge of autism and other related disabilities in order to best help and advocate for the good of our communities.

Thrivent Financial for Lutherans Announce a Challenge for 2007

A group of Thrivent Financial for Lutherans representatives from the Eau Claire-based Northwoods of WI & Upper Peninsula Michigan Regional Financial Office (RFO) are working together with local Thrivent Financial members and others to raise awareness and increase support for Chileda. The La Crosse area Thrivent Financial Representatives taking part in this innovative challenge welcome the opportunity to show their commitment to their members and work with them on projects that are very important to the community.

Since 2003, Thrivent Financial supplemented one dollar for every two dollars pledged during the Chileda Classic in increasing amounts through 2005. In 2006, Thrivent drastically upped their involvement in support of the building campaign to match ALL monies raised up to $50,000! For 2007, they are offering the $50,000 challenge once again for the purpose of continuing and enhancing the programs and facilities for the students, the families and the communities we serve.

“It is our goal to raise $100,000.00 in new donations for 2007 in order to take full advantage of the special relationship that Thrivent is offering”, says Shari Demet, Chileda’s development director. “Through this opportunity, we are able to see the value of our donors’ contributions mean even more because of the match.”
