Chileda was founded in 1973 in Stevens Point, WI. Although the staff was small in number, their positive vision was broad and ambitious. Soon, the word got out that a special program was being developed solely to help youngsters with multiple handicaps. Referrals came faster than Chileda could handle them. So we got a phone, bought a used typewriter, and hired another staff member. We've grown a lot since then.

Chileda opened the doors of its first La Crosse facility on the Franciscan Skemp/Mayo Health System campus in La Crosse, in 1980. In 2006, Chileda moved to its current and permanent home on Victory Street in La Crosse.

Here, you'll find many of the same amenities found in other residences: bedrooms, bathrooms, a kitchen, laundry facilities, and living areas. Our experiences have shown that an environment that is friendly and warm promotes learning and mental development. Therefore, creating a "home style" atmosphere is of primary importance to Chileda, and to our kids.

Of course, like many schools, Chileda also has special education classrooms, and a gymnasium; speech, physical therapy, occupational therapy, and medical areas.

Chileda is dedicated to providing a positive, productive living/learning experience for each youngster. Our efforts are recognized in our community, as well as nationwide.

Today, Chileda is recognized across the country as a provider and advocate of compassionate care for children and young adults who are developmentally disabled.
