Our
Educational Services are provided through a multi-faceted format that includes special
education, vocational education, adapted physical education, and therapeutic
recreation.
These services are directed by a curriculum of functional academic and
life skills to allow each student the opportunity to learn skills for use
in real-life community experiences.
Once enrolled at Chileda, all students participate in initial evaluations in skill
areas including cognitive/academic, social/behavioral, speech and language, gross
and fine motor, and activities of daily living. After initial assessments are completed,
an Individualized Education Program (IEP) meeting is convened. Results are shared
and the team, including the student, parents, other professionals and Chileda staff
determine the annual goals and short term objectives. We review the IEP quarterly
and rewrite it annually. Three formal quarterly review meetings are held and the
outcome of each is a written report including updates on each individual objective.
We believe in setting realistic, measurable goals upon admission, with special emphasis
on teaching the skills necessary for the student to live as independently as possible.
Our staff documents progress throughout the student’s stay. This information helps parents and referral agencies monitor the individual’s progress. We create each
student's program to meet specific individual goals. However, we
have also identified general topics that are important to all students: basic math
and reading, handwriting, time and money skills, human sexuality, health and nutrition,
social and coping skills, domestic skills, basic science and self-determination.
